The term

E-fuel, electrofuel,
synthetic fuel — what's the difference?

These three terms describe the same concept with different usage contexts. E-fuel is the technical shorthand widely used in media and industry. Electrofuel is the long form, preferred in academic publications. Synthetic fuel is the broadest term, covering all non-fossil synthesis pathways including GTL, CTL and biomass-to-liquid — not all of which qualify for EU green mandates.

On this portal, e-fuel refers exclusively to fuels produced from renewable or low-carbon hydrogen and captured CO₂ — the only category qualifying for EU RFNBO mandates under RED III, ReFuelEU and FuelEU Maritime.

Terms and their usage context
  • E-fuel — industry and media shorthand · most widely used in English · covers all Power-to-Liquid outputs
  • Electrofuel — academic long form · preferred in peer-reviewed publications · Nature Energy · Science
  • Synthetic fuel — broadest generic term · includes GTL/CTL which do not qualify for EU RFNBO mandates
  • RFNBO — Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin · EU legal definition · the qualifying category for RED III mandates
  • PtL / Power-to-Liquid — technical process term · Fischer-Tropsch · methanol synthesis · Sabatier · the production pathway

Technologie

How an
e-fuel is produced

Every e-fuel follows the same chain: energy → H₂ → chemical synthesis with CO₂ → liquid fuel. The synthesis reaction determines the final product. Three main pathways exist, each targeting a different end market.

The three synthesis pathways
  • Fischer-Tropsch — H₂ + CO → long-chain hydrocarbons → e-kerosene, e-diesel, e-petrol · same chemistry as refined petroleum · 100% drop-in · ReFuelEU · 2035 ICE exemption
  • Methanol synthesis — CO₂ + 3H₂ → CH₃OH + H₂O · liquid at ambient temperature · easy storage and transport · principal maritime e-fuel · Maersk · FuelEU Maritime
  • Haber-Bosch — N₂ + 3H₂ → 2NH₃ · no CO₂ capture required · zero carbon combustion · 2× FuelEU multiplier until 2033 · Yara Eyde in commercial service 2026

Production cost is dominated at ~55% by hydrogen cost. At €3–6/kg (current green H₂ from electrolysis), e-fuel remains more expensive than fossil. At €0.50/kg — FDE's target for Lorraine natural hydrogen by 2028 — e-fuels reach or undercut fossil equivalents, carbon tax included.

from biofuels?

Biofuels and e-fuels share the same core advantage — they work in existing engines without modification. But their fundamental difference is scalability: biofuels depend on finite biomass contested between food, transport and heating. E-fuels draw their carbon from the atmosphere — an effectively unlimited resource at planetary scale.

Natural hydrogen:
the factor that changes everything

Industrial e-fuel production economics: hydrogen feedstock = ~55% of cost · natural H₂ at €0.50/kg vs green H₂ at €3–6/kg = 60–70% cost reduction across all e-fuels · Photo: Unsplash (free to use)

Natural geological hydrogen is generated continuously in the Earth's crust by serpentinisation — the reaction of iron-rich rocks with deep groundwater. No electrolysis, no renewable electricity: hydrogen produced by geology itself.

On 23 June 2026, FDE confirmed 49.6% H₂ at 2,426m in the PTH-2 borehole at Pontpierre (Moselle) — among the highest natural H₂ concentrations ever measured in situ globally. FDE targets commercial production at €0.50/kg by late 2028. At that price, e-methanol falls to ~€280/t, e-kerosene to ~€1.20/L — ReFuelEU and FuelEU mandates become economically neutral for operators.

e-carburants.eu · Analyse éditoriale · Juillet 2026

"At €0.50/kg of geological hydrogen, every European e-fuel mandate stops being a compliance constraint and becomes a competitive advantage. Regulation creates the market; Lorraine natural hydrogen makes it profitable."
